Seasoned Paneer Bites

by Balvinder. 19 Comments

With holiday parties and eating healthy in mind, I am going to post three appetizers this month which would be light, healthy, tasty and budget friendly. Even though we do not celebrate Christmas as Christians do but as a matter of fact Indian culture has lot been influenced by European customs and festivals. Being born and brought up in a secular country I know how enthusiastically this day is celebrated in India and schools have Christmas holidays. So enjoy, holidays are meant to have fun whether it is Diwali or Christmas.

The first appetizer I am sharing today is made from Paneer. You know Paneer, right? Of course, you do. I did a post on kadahi Paneer last week. Yes, the same fresh cheese which is used in South Asian cuisine with a consistency of Tofu but certainly does not taste the same. This is not made from cultured milk nor is it salted but you can add some herbs and salt if making at home. Unlike typical market cheeses this is also not aged and does not melt or disintegrate under heat. It is easy to digest and is actually light on the stomach. It has all the good things of milk. The best thing about Paneer is its taste which you would not want to miss.

Cheeses are popular in party platter because they wonderfully go together with drinks; preferably wine. Although wine drinking is not a typical activity at the dinner table in Indian Homes. But is enjoyed by old and newer generation in small and large gatherings. This paneer preparation is mild so choose any wine that appeals your taste buds. This was one of the popular vegetarian snack, I had eaten in the armed forces parties. When you read the ingredients you will notice how simple it is.
If you are planning a dinner or party this month include this paneer in your cheese platter. You can buy a block (400gm) of Paneer for $5.00 from any grocery market. It is also easy to make at home. All you need is milk, lemon or vinegar and a cheese cloth. If your milk is soon expiring this is the best recipe to try. You can check the details here. Store the fresh paneer block in a glass container. It stays good for two – three days. If you want to keep it for a week immerse in water and change the water everyday. It is also easier to freeze. Slice 1/2 ” size slices, layer them with parchment paper. Put the slices in Ziploc bag.

Thaw the slices in fridge or on kitchen counter when required.

I’ve never had paneer but this dish looks very appetizing especially with the figs along side of it and the red wine. I’ll have to look for it next time I’m at the market.
