Orange Cheese Cake

by Balvinder. 45 Comments

This past week I did not feel like blogging. There were some thoughts going on in my mind of migrating to a self hosted word press or custom domain blog or simply switching to WordPress.

As some of you know I started this blog without much thought, and now as I go on other people’s blogs, I admire many, those are on WordPress or have their own domains. They look visibly attractive. I feel like that frog in the well who meets a turtle and learns about the outside world. I want my blog to look great but not willing to invest too much on something which is more like a hobby. Since there are so many good sources of information available on internet I checked a few, and everyone writes that transitioning steps are not that difficult but the comments on those posts dreads me to take the step. What if I get stuck? I am not tech savvy to come out of it.I am indecisive yet and would like some advice from bloggers who have migrated. I know it isn’t a big deal but I feel confused at this moment.

To let these thoughts go away for a short while I went straight in the kitchen to bake.

This orange cheese cake is a typical cheese cake with cream cheese but with a touch of orange flavored liqueur and fresh orange segments. Simple, pretty and delicious to eat !

I used biscotti crumbs for the crust but any kind of cracker or cookie crumbs would be fine. You might want to put a 4″ deep parchment paper collar in the pan, if using a 6″spring form pan because the cake rise over the top but it settles down as it cools. The collar will prevent the cheese cake from cracking as it will pull away from the side of the pan. I did not use the collar but it came out ok. Also, I did not use water bath method but left the cake in a turned off oven for 1 hour, that worked for me. Once the cake is completely cooled put it in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight and top with orange segments sprayed with orange glaze just an hour before serving.

Not only just orange cheese cake but I also baked Nutella Espresso cheese cake, courtesy of baker street whose post last week made me bake this for my daughter, who is a Nutella nut. My cake was over baked by 5 minutes.

ORANGE CHEESE CAKE

My minor changes show in orange

Ingredients:

Crust:

1 cup orange cookie crumbs (almond biscotti)
2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Filling:

2 ( 250 g each) package cream cheese
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt (sour cream)
100g (1/2 cup) sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp orange blossom honey (regular honey with 1 tsp orange zest)
1 tbsp orange flower water (cointreau)
1 tbsp orange zest

Decoration

about 20 orange segments
orange mist glaze (recipe follows)

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 6″ or8″ spring form pan.

2. In a bowl, combine cookie crumbs and butter. Press into bottom of prepared pan and set aside in fridge.

3. In a mixer bowl fitted with paddle attachment, beat cream cheese, sour cream and sugar on medium high speed until very smooth.

4. Add eggs, one at a time, making sure to blend well, stopping to scrape down sides of bowl after each addition. Stir in honey, liqueur and orange zest. Beat at medium for another minute.

5. Pour over cold crust, smoothing out to sides of pan.

6. Bake in preheated oven until top is light brown and center has a slight jiggle to it, 35 minutes. Let it sit in the oven for 1 hour after it has been turned off.

7. Remove cake from oven and let cool on wire rack and cool cake to room temperature. Just before serving add the topping.

Topping

Arrange orange segments on cake and keep some extra for serving on side. In a saucepan bring 1/4 sugar and 2 tbsp water to a rapid boil over medium heat. Boil until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tbsp cointreau or rum. Transfer to a spray mister bottle and use immediately over fruit.

    Well this is quite interesting.
I moved to WP over a month ago. Doing that made me lose all my ranking I build in almost a year of blogging with blogger. So it has been like starting all over again. I have very few pageviews now but I knew that would happen.
I must say I do like WP as it is a very modern platform with lots of help with SEO.
At the moment I am buying my own domain and a new WP theme which I should be uploading soon so my site will look different again (but I won’t be changing anymore hopefully!).
I would say, I am pleased with the move and I have done it now that I know I enjoy blogging.
I have just got my new email address: info@mylittleitaliankitchen.com so please use this from now on.
I love the cheese cake: it looks very professional indeed!! Ciao 🙂

You are trying to say that self hosted(own domain) is best. I want to know how much it will cost me. Thanks for your opinion my friend.

To buy your domain (the name of the blog) costs about 10£ for 2 years but this depends where you buy it. Hosting (an independent server where the blog sits) about 50 or 60£ a year.

That’s what confuses me, When you check on internet there are hundreds of posts saying how you can migrate without losing any data, but when you go thru the comments of bloggers they do face issues afterwards and have to call tech support.

I want to eat your cheesecake now please! I started on WordPress and my own domain so I don’t have any advice about tranisitioning. I like WordPress though and have had no issues with it whatsoever (touch wood). One thing I would say about having your own domain, rather than being hosted by WordPress, is that you are not part of the WordPress community so don’t get traffic referrals through it.

Same with me. I puts off things to another time that are not important. What I learnt from my research it is a work that needs your time which I have not but I have to find time if I want to do it. keep checking the comments you might answers for your question.

Should I expect cheese cake in your next post?

Balvinder if you want to move then do it as soon as possible. Buy a domain and host in your country and then let me know once you got it. I ll help you setting it up if you want but you have to tell me at least 3 weeks in advance so I can make some time for you.

Domain is the URL adresse. you would choose http://www.simplyglutenfreekitchen.com.
your domain host company will give you some hosting space (there are different packages which you can choose from). Hosting space includes the traffic size, media etc.

You will have to install the worpress installation manually on your new domain. In the same time I suggest you continue to publish posts here, so that you can work on your new worpress page in peace. Once the design and plugins are set on your worpress page, you can move all your posts and comments from blogger to WP. then you ll have to redirect as well.

Its not that difficult if you understand the concept of hosting an own blog. I love wordpress and I am sooo happy that I moved. I decided to do that when blogger suspended my blog for 24 h for no apparent reason, and when there is a problem with google, you can scream and shout and you won’t find a way contacting them. Blogger has the right on all your content here, a self hosted blog has all the freedom! One more reason why I moved was the plugin easy in wp. That means you can build up your blog to your liking if you invest some time of yours. I love doing that and its fun! Blogger was a pain in the a**.

If you are afraid of moving to wp but you want your own domain name without the blogspot, then you can do that with blogger as well, but in my opinion I d always choose wp, no matter how much work it is at the beginning after some time its 100% worthwhile!

I don’t think so you loose traffic, I didn’t at least. I picked up pretty quickly in wp. It depends on how you configurate it.

Helene, Your comment gave me a sigh of relief… I will think on your suggestion.

Balvinder , hosting your own domain is such a pain in the behind ! lol I , too , is definitely not tech savvy and not very creative ! Seen my new header ?! I had to spent online for days just to do that tsk tsk 😛 😀 When I bought my domain name ( cost me 10 bucks US ) , I’m planning to buy the web hosting service as well but changed my mind and cancelled it – it cost about US$ 47./ year from namecheap.com , the good thing about the paid web hosting is that you can have an immediate support if there are problems with your own site …… My site as you know is still hosted by blogger which is free ….. Do Google some more on having your own domain name and about web hosting !

Onto that delicious offering ! 😀 Your cheesecake looks wonderful ! I love both flavor and the silky texture …. A slice or three , pretty please ?! 😀

My daughter is a web development manager & programmer, she too encourage me to change to WP and get my own domain name. But so far I got no problem with blogspot so have not decide to moved. Anyway I love fooling around my computer and make changes here and there.

I think you google around and not make harsh decision. Wish you all the best.

I got my domain name from 1&1, and I’m paying $9.99 per year, though for the past 2 years, I only paid $4.99 because of some promo. I’ve been considering getting web hosting service too but I still haven’t done so. My blog is still hosted on blogger. I’m not blogging professionally and I guess my current set up works fine. You should weigh the pros and cons of having your own web hosting. Though it gives you freedom, think if you want to pay for something that you don’t really need.
Btw, your orange cheese cake looks mouthwatering! I would love a BIG slice right now!

    Love your cheesecake!!
Transferring is time taking process and you have to be very patient if you’re doing it yourself. When I enquired web designers they were charging $100 for the transfer and $400-500 for the WordPress design.Anyway I decided to do it myself and I’m quite pleased with it :)The traffic was slow in the first week, but has picked up considerably this week 🙂
I did not lose any data or comments, but I lost my GFC followers. As I wrote to you first change your domain name while you’re still on Blogger and then make the move.It will make the transfer much easier. At the end of the day, content is king and you will get traffic based on the content!Let me know if you have any other questions and Good Luck 🙂

Honestly my friend I think going to wordpress is a great option – there are many agencies which, for a fee, while transfer all your blog posts from one blog to a self hosted one and it makes workings a lot easier + provides a stronger copyright 🙂
Think on it while devouring your insanely delicious cheesecake my friend!

Like you, I’ve been thinking of moving to a self-hosted domain too. But it has been put on hold as I’m afraid I may not have time to handle the hiccups. You must’ve know that I’ve changed my template from red to white recently & adding a header. Simple stuff like this took me months to fix as I’d encountered lots of problems after changing. What I thought was a simple change turned out to be a nightmare. Lol!

Well, your cheesecake certainly has some calming effect. Hahaha!

I’ve read your comment on my post that you are thinking and now I see your post that you’ve been seriously thinking. 🙂 I started off with my own domain and used wordpress. I never regretted. However, if you asked me if I could have done all alone, I have to say no. I’m technology challenged and I couldn’t have done without my husband (he’s not an engineer or anything but he is pretty capable of things by simply lots of googling and reading documents). You might want a professional help if you do it because once you did something wrong (like me) and don’t know how to fix, it’s really hard. This time around I changed my hosting server from shared to self hosting so that my site doesn’t need to share with other sites (when I’m getting a lot of traffic, my server cannot hold many visitors and my site just went crash). It’s always so much to think about. Good luck with your decision. 🙂 Your orange cheesecake looks wonderful!!

I really like your blog and have been trying some of these dishes out. I am so glad that you had created this blog. It is so very helpful to me. This initial step was a new beginning. Maybe there is another new beginning to venture into. If you don’t go for it, you will not know. If you try and it didn’t work, at least you gave it a try. Plus you have help, take it. The help presented itself for a reason. This is what you love to do, do it. Traffic will come ~

I don’t worry of traffic I worry of the steps to migrate, those transferring of files and setting up the whole blog thing. I did not understand what help are you talking about?
