Cacao Kefir Fruit Smoothie

by Balvinder. 13 Comments

Smoothies are one of my go-to snack and I’ve been making them for years now. They’re sweet. They’re refreshing. They’re packed with nutrients. I mostly make green smoothies, but I like to try other things as well to feed my body a variety of vitamins and minerals. This delicious smoothie tastes almost as good as a dessert and you would never guess how nutritious it is. It combines kefir, cacao powder, hemp hearts, and seasonal fruits which satisfy your sweet cravings in a naturally healthy manner.

The base of my smoothie is Blueberry flavored kefir. Kefir (pronounced kee-fer) is a tangy and tart yogurt like drink full of good bacteria. We have always eaten a lot of yogurt, but I  heard kefir contains more friendly probiotics than regular yogurt. Hence beginning of 2017 I started adding kefir in smoothies. If you are one of that people who never had any kind of probiotics before my suggestion would be to start having kefir slowly. Kefir tastes awesome but takes some time getting used to. It is highly detoxifying and you might experience some negative symptoms if you start out with a full glass straight away. This does not mean you should stop drinking kefir. In fact, it probably means that your body needs the good bacteria in milk kefir all the more. So start off with  2-3 tbsp. a day in a smoothie and slowly increase as you begin to tolerate it.

This smoothie gets an added antioxidant boost from cacao powder.

Cacao powder is an all-natural unprocessed alternative to cocoa powder without the fat and sugar. Rich in magnesium and iron, it’s a truly healthy way to hit those chocolate cravings! It’s a bit pricey but makes incredible smoothies and desserts.

Give it a try and let me know how you like and feel!

It’s good if you can drink plain kefir without adding in a smoothie.

Balvinder, this sounds delicious! I’ve not heard of hemp hearts before; perhaps there is another name for it here in the US. I see that you are gluten-intolerant. I’m not, but several of my friends are, so I’ve developed a number of GF recipes for them. I look forward to checking out your GF recipes soon.

I think hemp hearts are sold by the same name in Canada and US. I have been using it for a few years and I find them more neutral tasting than chia or Flax. Plus they have a very good nutrition profile. Thanks for your your lovely comment. Well, see you again.
