Naturally Sweetened Beet Lemonade

by Balvinder. 36 Comments

You’ve heard the saying: when life hands you lemons make lemonade. I took a step further and made Beet lemonade. Not only does this beet lemonade tastes good, it is refreshing, adds nutrition and looks lovely!  Plus it is refined sugar free. Yes, you read that right! With my daughter off sugar from a month and not eaten her own birthday cake, I could not think of adding sugar to the lemonade. Besides, she loves lemonade a lot.

This lemonade is flavorful, tangy, and you get all the sweetness you need from the grapes. Let me tell you grapes are great for snacking but since they have a high sugar and water content they are excellent in cool drinks and you’ll be amazed how much they sweeten things up.  My family could not believe it was sugar free. With the weather warming up this healthy lemonade is sure to become your favorite in no time. Both, beet and grapes have amazing health benefits and this lemonade allows you to enjoy the vitamins, minerals and health-boosting phytonutrients.

You can add soda or sparkling water to make it fancy for your next BBQ or backyard party or can be sipped as is on a hot summer day.

Oh, before I get to the recipe, I want to thank two lovely people who gave life to  my recently posted recipes. It makes the whole effort of writing a food blog so much worthwhile when my recipes are cooked and approved by friends, readers and food bloggers.

Making beet lemonade

Vasudha Vij, a non-blogger, doting mother, follower of my blog and first person to put request on my Reader’s request page, recreated my lemony lemon cake. She says it turned out delicious. She was little hesitant to share the picture in public but I assured her nothing wrong will come out of it and it will inspire others to try more. Thank you for sharing the picture and for your trust, Vasudha!

The quickest feedback I have ever received is on my mom’s boiled egg curry. I posted this recipe on Tuesday and Shubha, a food blogger herself, tried out on Thursday. She has done a wonderful job. I love her presentation better than my own. Thanks you Shubha I am honored you chose a recipe that has so much sentimental value for me. Just visit her blog  Meri rasoi  to check out Maharashtrian and Mangalorean recipes and much more.

If you decide to make this beet lemonade do let me know through your comments or by sharing a picture. Nothing brightens my day better than a positive feedback and it is your encouragement what keeps me going and inspires me to contribute more to this site.

Naturally Sweetened Beet Lemonade

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 beet, washed, scrubbed and diced
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 cups sweet green grapes
  • 3 cups chilled water
  • salt to taste
  • crushed ice

Instructions

  1. In a high speed blender, add diced beet, lemon juice, salt, 1/2 cup water and grapes.
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Strain the liquid into a pitcher. Add the remaining chilled water.
  4. To serve, add crushed ice to the glass, and pour in freshly made beet lemonade.

Notes

I have used green grapes, as that’s what I had. Can be replaced with any type of red/purple grape ( the color and sweetness of the juice can vary somewhat with the substitution)

I don’t like a lot the taste of beetroots, but last summer I juiced them and they tasted pretty good. I think I’ll give this lemonade a try. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Why have I never thought of this! There really is so much sugar in lemonade and what a wonderful idea to naturally sweeten it this way. I always knew you were one smart lady!

I agree grapes lend a natural sweetness to juices. When I was on my juice cleanse (and somehow survived it) my favorite recipe was the beetroot juice and that day was the best day of the diet. I added pomegranate too and used red grapes but with the beetroot and lemon the concoction was sweet with a little tang. Both Vasudha and Shubha’s version of your recipes look great. That egg curry is on my list of dishes to try from your blog.

I am definitely trying this tomorrow. Have all ingredients at home and being on the lower haemoglobin levels , always try to squeeze in beetroot in my food.
Although I have heard that beetroot contains high levels of sugar. So may be it doesn’t sweeten ur drink but it does give sugar to your body. So may be people with high sugar levels , check this piece of info.

Thank you, Sneha! Beetroot does contain sugar but not as much to make the lemonade tastes sweet that’s why I added grapes instead of sugar. Do share how you like it.

For so few ingredients, there is a lot going on flavour wise in this drink. Sweet, sour, salty and then a powerhouse of nutrients!
