Besan Ka Sheera – Great for Cough and Cold

by Balvinder. 6 Comments

When winter season knocks at our doors, most of us tend to catch a cold. That’s when warm foods such as oats porridge, turmeric milk, khichdi, ginger tea, and chicken soup, all come in handy. One creamy concoction that can help too is Besan ka Sheera. It is an age-old effective home remedy from Punjabi households for treating the common cold.

In north India, there are many variations of Sheera. The one I am sharing with you has always been made with besan (Bengal gram flour), ghee, milk, turmeric, black pepper, and cardamom.  This sheera is like a semi-thick soup that is known to bring immense relief from the cold.  Honey or powdered jaggery is added for sweetness to it, which makes the sheera tastes amazingly delicious. Some people prefer to make a bit runny version of this, but I find that eating small spoonfuls of sheera soothes the aching throat and calms the sinuses. Even if you aren’t sick, you can still eat this in winters as is or by making it thicker and richer in halwa form with dry fruits in it.

Besan ka sheera must be consumed warm right before bedtime.  It is believed that having it at night time dries up the phlegm and induces good sleep. Although besan ka Sheera won’t treat your cold directly, it certainly provides a comforting and soothing feeling to your body and soul. Hope you try ad enjoy!
