Refreshing Salty Lassi / Yogurt drink

by Balvinder. 41 Comments

Lassi is a refreshing and nutritious drink,Β  originally from Punjab but now enjoyed all over the world. It is particularly a summer drink and yogurt is the vital ingredient in its preparation. Yogurt as you all know is easier to digest than milk. So people who have trouble digesting lactose can easily eat yogurt and drink lassi because the bacteria breaks down some of the lactose in milk.

Lassi , which looks similar to smoothie is made by blending yogurt, water and other ingredients such as salt and spices for salty lassi and sugar and rose water for sweet lassi. You can customize the sweet lassi by adding fruits such as mango, blueberry etc. to enhance the flavor and taste. The proportion of yogurt to water, in lassi depends on personal preference and when you are drinking. The more the proportion of yogurt, the thicker and more substantial the drink. If the lassi is for a snack, the amount of yogurt is more and if you are making it to go with a meal then the proportion of yogurt is less. Usually, the salty lassi is thinner and goes with a meal and sweet lassi can be had for a quick breakfast and a nourishing snack.

I give you the recipe of Salty Lassi with aromatic roasted cumin and dried mint leaves. It is very cooling to your body in hot summer afternoon or to wash down a spicy meal. You can even make it in your glass with battery operated whisker or frother.

SALTY LASSI

Ingredients:

500 ml unflavored yogurt ( mine is home made from 2% milk)

750 ml water

1/2 tsp cumin, roasted and ground

1/2 tsp black pepper, freshly ground

1/4 tsp black salt (it is just for flavor)

1 tsp dry mint leaves ( rub into your palms to crush)

salt as per taste

sugar as per taste (optional)

few ice cubes

Method:

  1. In a blender, combine yogurt, salt, water, 3/4 of mint and ground seasoning. Blend well. Add more water if you like a thinner consistency.
  2. Serve in tall glasses. Garnish with remainingΒ  dried mint.
  3. You may prepare the drink ahead of time and keep it chilled in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Update July 13th, 2021

Note: Drying mint at home is very simple mostly hands off project to save money at the store and you can use all year round. Here is the video.

I use mango only for smoothies or desserts. If you like sweet try the rosewater lassi.

We never miss lassi whenever we eat at Indian restaurant. We also go for the salty version and its really great to cool our system after all the spicy food. Its time I give your recipe a try for a home made version.

Thanks for sharing the lassi recipe. In Kerala we call it Sambharam(with a touch of ginger, chili and curry leaves) —I just recovered a problem on my blog. Thanks for letting me know that my comment was being read as spam. It has been fixed and is OK now:)
